What went down when Moncler staged a runway show in a snowstorm

Moncler is a brand that’s always thinking bigger, better, harder, faster, which makes sense since it’s one of the most popular outerwear brands currently on the market. In 2022, the Italian label took over the entire Duomo in Milan to mark its 70th birthday with a massive show, before landing in London in 2023 to continue the celebrations. Then, as London Fashion Week came to a close, the behemoth Kensington Olympia became the Moncler Genius playground, in which Rick Owens presented a sleep pod inside a rave and Hiroshi Fujiwara put on a robot peep show. After pit stops in Shanghai and St. Moritz in 2024, last weekend saw the first of Moncler’s monumental events for the new year, as it landed in Courchevel to present its new Grenoble offering, made up of over 140 looks. Taking place on a snowy peak at the very top of uber-exclusive ski resort Courchevel, needless to say it was a spectacle. Here’s everything that went down.

Heading up the mountains to land somewhere around the 1850 metres above sea level mark – otherwise known as Courchevel’s most exclusive resort – came a bunch of the brand’s friends and ambassadors. Fresh from fashion week was Alton Mason, who swapped the runway for the front row this time around, as well as everyone’s fave fictional psycho and Gossip Girl himself, Penn Badgley. Adrien Brody also made the steep journey up the mountain, presumably with his recently acquired Oscar stuffed inside his suitcase, and Topboy’s Michael Ward, with Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Leonardo DiCaprio joining, too. Rounding off the guestlist was rising Argentinian singer Tini, who took over Dazed’s social channels to offer a look into her weekend on the slopes. Check it out here.

Moncler knows how to put on a party. Across the weekend, its 400 guests were taken to dinner at Le Chalet des Pierres, a cosy, wood-lined venue tucked away close to the top of the resort, and for a boozy lunch at Bagatelle, one of the most raucous restaurants in the whole resort, perched right on top of the mountain. The gondola ride to the top (in Moncler-branded pods, obvs) was pretty nailbiting for those with an aversion to heights, but the view when the sun came out and spotlighted the impressive peak emerging from the clouds was definitely worth it.

Courchevel hasn’t seen significant snowfall in weeks, so of course the day of the fashion show – that has been in the works for almost four months – a severe weather warning was put in place and a blizzard set in that very afternoon. However, Moncler was well equipped – that’s what it does best, after all. Guests were given massive matching capes, wool beanie hats, and gloves, and ushered up to Courchevel airport, where the highest runway in Europe is situated. The blankets that had been placed on the benches might have been covered in about three inches of snow, but the heaters underneath, plus portable handwarmers, kept everyone just about toasty enough, and pretty abnormally for a fashion show, the catwalk kicked off promptly.

The Moncler collection getting its big debut was the Grenbole line, which is designed for life in the mountains and keeping adventure seekers warm and comfortable, so the blizzard was no big deal. As an orchestra of musicians in the same snowball-esque capes as the audience struck up, a bunch of snowmobiles whizzed up the runway and heralded the start of the show. Out came 140 models in looks from the offering, comprising cosy ski suits, massive parkas, sleek salopettes, and sculptural knitwear ideal for the après, as well as accessories including Moncler-branded helmets, ski masks, and snowboards. The cast itself was stellar, with legends like Eva Herzigová, Adriana Lima, and Amber Valletta traipsing through the snow, backdropped by a light installation that made it look like the Northern Lights were dancing across the sky.

As the show came to a dramatic close and guests shook the snow off their clothes and piled out of the venue into awaiting cars, there was one more stop on the agenda before hometime – the afterparty, obviously. This time, Moncler took over Courchevel’s oldest and most exclusive late-night drinking spot, Le Cap Horn, where guests were fed a five-course meal as drinks got flowing. Soon after, the dancefloor was full of celebrities, editors, and influencers warming up to old-school R&B and classic house, before heading down the mountain to bed.
