What Baskin-Robbins’ 4,800 calorie turkey cake REALLY tastes like, as Chrissy Teigen jumps on the viral trend
If cooking a turkey this Thanksgiving doesn’t appeal, then this ice cream rendition of the festive bird might get your vote.
Baskin-Robbins announced its popular turkey-shaped ice cream cake would be back on the menu this year, costing just under $50.
The hefty creation features sugar cones as turkey legs, a shiny caramel praline topping in lieu of turkey skin, and any choice of ice cream flavor inside.
Serving from 12 to 16 people, the entire cake contains more than 4,800 calories according to DailyMail.com’s estimates.
Thanks to its quirky guise, content creators have flocked to get a slice of the Baskin-Robbins turkey cake, and Chrissy Teigen even demonstrates how to ‘carve’ it in an Instagram video.
She explains: ‘I like to do the legs first… Take a super sharp knife… I like to go in at an angle so that your turkey leg has a nice roundness to it.’
The DailyMail.com health team treated ourselves to the iconic Baskin-Robbins turkey cake to investigate if it lives up to the hype.
One of our taste testers was concerned about its food colorings, but more often than not, our team enjoyed the sweet take on a holiday classic.

Baskin-Robbins does not disclose the cake’s ingredients or nutrition value, but DailyMail.com did our best to estimate based on what we knew was in the turkey, including Oreo Cookies ‘n Cream ice cream, waffle cones, caramel praline sauce, and cake frosting.
A spokesperson told this website: ‘Because all our cakes our customizable with your favorite ice cream flavor, it will vary based on the guest selections.’
Most of Baskin-Robbins’ ice cream flavors contain more than 250 calories per scoop.
Meanwhile, one spoonful of caramel praline topping adds another 120 calories to the load.
Our bird came stuffed with Oreo Cookies ‘n Cream, which contains up to 280 calories per scoop.
Based on the size of the cake and how big one scoop of ice cream, it contains around 15 portions.
When it came time to carve our ice cream bird, we weren’t sure how to first dig in. While it’s recommended to first separate the leg from the thigh on an actual Thanksgiving turkey, we wondered if we should split it down the middle like we would a normal cake.
Maybe watching Chrissy Teigen’s instructional would have been beneficial, as the cake’s density and sticky consistency made it a little tricky to tackle.
Chrissy Teigen starts with separating the legs, then she likes to tackle the breasts.

Chrissy Teigen says after removing the legs from the turkey cake, she likes to tackle the breasts
In her video, she shows how she cuts straight down the middle of the ‘bird’ and then cuts into the sides ‘right over the wing.’
‘You have a beautiful breast right there,’ she exclaims, as she holds a slice of the creamy dessert up to the camera.
She then goes about cutting up the rest of the ‘turkey meat,’ while telling the viewers she treats it as though she’s carving a traditional bird.
We agreed, and decided the ice cream cone legs were probably the easiest part to dismantle, as they simply detach from the body of the ‘bird.’
Then we split it down the middle and dug in.
We were pleasantly surprised. Connor Boyd, head of Health and Science at DailyMail.com, exclaimed it was the best turkey he had ever had, with the ‘skin’ being his favorite part.
He explained: ‘The thick chewy Oreo ice cream was lovely though more cookie bits would’ve taken it to the next level. Just like with a real turkey, the skin was one of the most delicious parts.
‘Instead of crispy salty goodness you get from the animal’s skin, the slightly burnt caramel flavor in the cake’s outer layer complimented the more traditional vanilla-cookie sweetness of the ice cream perfectly.’
Deputy Health editor Alexa Lardieri, the vegetarian of our group, said: ‘Given that I’m a vegetarian, this cake is the only turkey I’ll be eating this Thanksgiving holiday.
‘While it’s been some time since I’ve had actual turkey, I have to say, I prefer the Oreo cookies and caramel “skin” of the cake as opposed to the innards and oily coating of a real bird.’
And despite being lactose intolerant, Stacy Liberatore, the science and tech editor, couldn’t resist giving the ‘skin’ a taste. She deemed it ‘delicious’ with a ‘chocolatey-yet-not-too-sweet taste.’
I have to say, the ice cream turkey was very moreish and I went in for seconds. My favorite part was the faux grass cake frosting and caramelized skin. The perfect combination for an afternoon pick-me-up.
However, the garish color of the trimmings concerned health reporter Luke Andrews.
Fearing they could contain a hotchpotch of food dyes and additives, he wasn’t as enthused about giving the sweet treat a whirl.
He admitted: ‘I find this cake extremely concerning because it likely contains Green Dye No. 3.
‘It sits atop a bubonicly toxic-colored bright green nest, suggesting use of the dye – which has been banned in Europe after studies linked it to neurobehavioral problems in children.
‘I did ask Baskin-Robbins for the ingredients list, but they were not forthcoming. Curious.’
Baskin-Robbins says its wacky dessert will ‘make anyone do a double take’ and ‘it’s a show stopping non-traditional tradition’ designed to look ‘like it’s fresh out of the oven’.
