What are tactical nuclear weapons and how could Putin use them?

Arab Defense Website November 1, 2024: He said Russian President Vladimir Putin is not bluffing about using nuclear weapons. If he carries out his threat, his weapon of choice will likely be tactical nuclear weapons. He is not the only one talking about these weapons. North Korea’s recent missile tests included “tactical nuclear” exercises simulating a strike on South Korea, according to the North’s state-run media.

Tactical nuclear weapons are sometimes referred to as “mini-nukes,” although they can still cause devastating deaths and destruction. They are designed for limited strikes against specific targets in relatively close proximity, such as command centers, rather than destroying cities from afar.

The explosive yield of tactical nuclear weapons can range from less than a kiloton to about 100 kilotons, while the explosive yield of strategic nuclear weapons can be up to a thousand kilotons. The bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 were between 12 and 21 kilotons. The bomb dropped on Hiroshima weighed 9,700 pounds, and the bomb that destroyed Nagasaki weighed 10,800 pounds.
