A cyclone warning has been issued with two tropical lows threatening to intensify as they head towards Australia.
Gale force winds and heavy rain are forecast for Western Australia’s Pilbara and Kimberley coasts in the coming days.
A tropical cyclone could develop as early as Sunday, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
Meteorologists are ‘increasingly confident’ that tropical low 11U will intensify with a 70 per chance it will develop into a tropical cyclone by early next week.
The chances of the other tropical low named 10U turning into a cyclone are less than five per cent.
The system is expected to sweep across WA’s west and south-west parallel to the coast in offshore waters.
Any cyclone that forms could intensify into a tropical three cyclone, which is capable of producing 200km/h winds that would leave a trail of destruction in its wake, including fallen trees, building and structural damage.
Even if the cyclone doesn’t develop, heavy rain and powerful winds will still smash state’s north-west.
Two tropical lows forming off the coast of Western Australia could produce a cyclone by Sunday, the Bureau of Meteorology has warned
BOM senior meteorologist Joey Rawson said the system will likely remain offshore but can’t rule out the the chance it may make landfall.
‘There is increasing confidence that [a cyclone will develop], possibly bringing windy conditions and heavy rainfall to the Pilbara coast,’ Mr Rawson told 7News.
‘Although the system is likely to remain offshore from the Pilbara coast there is a small chance it may make landfall somewhere along the Pilbara coast.
‘The key for the community is to be prepared, particularly in the Pilbara, and to monitor both the Bureau and EmergencyWA websites.’
A strong wind warning has been issued much of WA coast on Friday, including the West Kimberley, Ningaloo, Gascoyne, Bunbury, Leeuwin, Albany, Esperance and Eucla.
Perth is in for a wet weekend with up to 10mm forecast for Friday and another 30mm on Saturday.
It comes after a week of wild weather smashed much of Australia’s east coast.
