Werribee: Footy star breaks down in tears after incredible VFL grand final 2024 victory

Werribee are VFL premiers after clinching an incredible six-point victory over Southport to end their 31-year wait for the competition’s top prize.

The Tigers had to weather a late surge from the Sharks, which saw them reduce a 26-point deficit with 11 minutes remaining, to hold out for a famous victory, having trailed by 19 points before the half time break.

Werribee ended up running out 10.9 (69) to 8.15 (63) winners, triggering emotional scenes at IKON Park.

It is the first time the Tigers have won the flag since 1991.

Werribee captain Dom Brew, who was named the league’s best player earlier this week, couldn’t hold back his tears after the final siren.

‘That’s the life’s work, isn’t it? These boys … we win the minor premiers but we shouldn’t be here. There’s a lot of boys under 22, and I’m so proud of them,’ he told Channel Seven.

‘He (our coach) gave us an absolute roasting (at halftime). One of the best I’ve ever copped. Pretty direct. It’s what we needed, we were mucking around, we weren’t playing the way we should’ve.

‘Never (worried). Never count us out, mate. There’s people that get knocked down and they don’t get up but us boys from Werribee, we get back up every time and keep going.’

Jack Henderson was awarded the Norm Goss Medal after registering 23 disposals and two goals.

He was presented the medal by former Werribee star and current Geelong player Shaun Mannagh, who won the award last year with 28 disposals and six goals on the losing team.
