‘Weather Girl’: Buzzy Edinburgh Fringe Play Netflix Is Developing Into Limited Series To Transfer To Soho Theatre
The buzzy Edinburgh Fringe play Weather Girlwhich Netflix has acquired for a limited series, will transfer to London’s Soho Theatre next year.
The production will have a limited run at the Soho Theatre from 5 March – 5 April 2025.
Written by Brian Watkins (Outer Range) and Julia McDermott (Women of the Movement), the production picked up the Scotsman Fringe First, Popcorn Award, LIST Award, and Lustrum Award during its run in Edinburgh. Described as an “apocalyptic one-woman play,” the production follows a Californian weather girl in meltdown.
The play’s official synopsis reads: Stacey is a California weather girl. An oversexed and underpaid harbinger of our dying planet. But today, her regular routine of wildfires, prosecco, and teeth whitening descends into a scorched earth catastrophe before she discovers something that will save us all.
The London production will be directed by Tyne Rafaeli (The Coast Starlight). Rafaeli preciously collaborated with Watkins on Epiphany at Lincoln Centre. The play will be mounted by Francesca Moody Productions, which also produced the Edinburgh shows. Their previous productions include Baby Reindeer, Fleabag, Kathy and Stella Solve a Murder!, and last year’s A Streetcar Named Desire revival starring Paul Mescal.
Discussing today’s announcement, Watkins said: “I am thrilled that we will get to share this very personal piece with London audiences, at a time when our relationship with the environment feels akin to the runaway train that is this play. The brilliant team at Francesca Moody Productions did such a stellar job in Edinburgh where we were overwhelmed by the response; we can’t wait to share that same excitement with wider audiences at such a pressing time.”
