Virgil van Dijk signs new Liverpool deal as Reds captain joins Mohamed Salah in committing to two-year contract at Anfield club after lengthy saga

Virgil van Dijk has committed his future to Liverpool with the 33-year-old signing a two-year deal at the club.

The captain has agreed a deal to keep him at the Anfield club until 2027 to end a long-running saga over his future, with Mohamed Salah also signing a new deal last week for a further two years.

Van Dijk has repeatedly discussed his love for the club and has gone on record multiple times this season over his desire to stay at Liverpool.

Mail Sport reported last Wednesday how a breakthrough had been found in negotiations to extend the deals of both Van Dijk and Salah and now that has been officially smoothed over, with negotiations led by sporting director Richard Hughes.

The former Bournemouth chief inherited a club with a cloud of uncertainty over it but Hughes has now led the search for a new manager, which saw Arne Slot be appointed, and signed the new deals of Van Dijk and Salah.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, though, remains out of contract with Real Madrid putting a substantial offer on the table to sign the vice-captain on a free transfer this summer. At this stage, nothing is officially signed and the Spanish giants need to inform Liverpool if and when it is.

Van Dijk joined Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 and has made 314 appearances for the club, 100 of which as captain. He has won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, two Carabao Cups and a FIFA Club World Cup.

Liverpool confirmed the big news on Thursday with a tweet that read: ‘The skipper stays,’ alongside an image of Van Dijk with the caption: ‘It was always Liverpool.’
