Urgent.. Minister of Irrigation: Egypt faces several challenges in the field of water

Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Dr. Hani Sweilem, confirmed that Egypt faces several challenges in the field of water, resulting from population increase and limited renewable water resources, which resulted in a decline in the per capita share of water to nearly half the level of water scarcity, with a large gap. Between water resources and uses, the Egyptian state has pushed to increase reliance on non-traditional water resources, in addition to the impact of climate change, which affects Egypt internally and externally.

This came during the participation of the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation in the high-level ministerial session On “Sustainable Water Management in Arid Regions to Combat Drought,” which was held within the activities of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP 16), which was held in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.

Suwailem said that with the increase in water needs and the need to improve the management process Water and food security. The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation is implementing many projects and procedures to develop water facilities, clear 55 thousand kilometers of canals and drains, maintain lifting stations, implement flood protection facilities, and others. With huge investments exceeding 10 billion US dollars in recent years, while working to expand digitization procedures and water management governance under the umbrella of the second generation of the irrigation system in Egypt (2.0).

The Minister pointed out the importance of strengthening cooperation between countries and regional organizations. And internationally to support the capabilities of exchanging knowledge and technology to enhance progress in the field of water, and also work to provide the funds required to implement projects in developing countries to meet basic human needs and ensure the availability of water and access to it by the population, especially with the need to implement effective measures to adapt to climate change, especially since the poorest countries. It is the one that bears the cost of the effects of climate change.
