Urgent| “Human Rights” recommends a comprehensive review of the death penalty in accordance with international standards
Within the framework of the activities of the National Council for Human Rights to ensure the compatibility of human rights with international standards, the Constitution and Egyptian legislation, the Council’s Legislative Committee held a symposium headed by Ambassador Dr. Moushira Khattab, President of the Council, on reducing the death penalty and limiting it to very serious crimes over the course of three sessions.
The first session discussed the death penalty between preservation and abolition, in which Counselor Adly Hussein, former head of the criminal courts, spoke, and the second session discussed the death penalty in Egyptian legislation. He spoke It included Dr. Shawqi Salah, a professor at the Police Academy, and Counselor Dr. Michel Hakim, a member of the Technical Office at the Ministry of Justice. The third session discussed the role of the judge in imposing the death penalty, in which Counselor Mohamed Sherine, the former head of the criminal courts, spoke. The symposium was attended by a large number of researchers and those interested in human rights. p>
The symposium concluded with important recommendations, including the necessity of reviewing penal legislation in Egypt to be consistent with international standards, and limiting the application of this punishment. For the most serious crimes, in accordance with international standards in defining the most serious crimes, the death penalty for political and economic crimes must be abolished and custodial penalties imposed instead.
