Dr. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, confirmed that the university hospital system witnessed an unprecedented leap during the year 2024, thanks to the great interest that the Egyptian state and its political leadership attach to developing the health care sector and improving the quality of services provided to citizens.
The Minister pointed out the Ministry’s keenness to modernize the performance of university hospitals by providing intensive educational and training programs. To improve the skills of medical and nursing personnel, and provide the latest medical technologies; To ensure that patients receive the best treatments available, as well as focusing on interspecialties, and working to digitize all services provided in university hospitals, in order to facilitate procedures for patients and improve work efficiency.
Dr. Ayman Ashour indicated that the budget University hospitals increased significantly from 10 billion pounds in 2014 to 28 billion pounds in 2023, confirming that the number of university hospitals reached 125 hospitals, divided into two parts, 73 hospitals providing multi-specialty medical services, And 52 hospitals specializing in oncology, addiction treatment, mental health, women’s health, geriatrics, clinical toxicology, emergency, gastroenterology and liver, pediatrics, ophthalmology and surgery, nephrology and urology, day surgeries, obstetrics and gynecology, and cardiothoracic and vascular surgery. These hospitals include 30% of the total health care beds in government facilities, and 50% of the total intensive care beds in the government sector, and this diversity contributes to meeting the needs of patients. The Minister confirmed that university hospitals received approximately 25 million patients during the year 2024, and more than
620,440 operations were performed. Surgery in various medical specialties, including 350,000 operations that require high skill and special techniques, 220 robotic surgeries, including (40) surgeries for children, and providing dialysis services for approximately 588,000 dialysis sessions. Bloody, and university hospitals provide these services thanks to their possession of 34,618 beds, 5,254 beds for intensive and intermediate care,
896 specialized nurseries for newborns, indicating that these achievements are a testimony to the efficiency of university hospitals, and their commitment to providing the best Health care for citizens.
Within the framework of developing health services in university hospitals, 19 billion pounds were invested in 160 projects to improve infrastructure and quality. Services, this included developing 33 hospitals and implementing 127 projects to raise efficiency. Among the most prominent projects is the opening of the Liver Transplant Center at Mansoura University, the largest medical center in the Middle East and Africa, at a cost of one billion pounds, and the establishment of the University Hospital in Suez at a cost of 2.4 billion pounds, which includes 17 clinics and 15 operating rooms. And 260 beds, in addition to specialized units, such as: dialysis and intensive care. The Medical City at Ain Shams University was also developed at a cost of 10 billion pounds, with the addition of new units, such as: Nurseries for premature babies, an increase in intensive care beds, and at Smouha University Hospital, a vascular catheterization unit was opened, and a cardiac care unit equipped with the latest technologies, and at Al-Mowasat Hospital, the Manchester Building for the Study of Medicine and Surgery was opened in cooperation with the University of Manchester, and several other units were developed. In 5 hospitals via video conference, such as: the Pediatric Ophthalmology Surgery Unit, and the Hearing and Balance Center; Which contributed to improving the capacity and quality of medical services.
Dr. Ayman Ashour confirmed that university hospitals participated effectively in implementing several presidential initiatives, including “remote diagnosis” and the “Eliminating Waiting Lists” initiative. and oncology initiatives, pointing to the tremendous achievement achieved by university hospitals within the framework of efforts to eliminate waiting lists in the presidential project to eliminate waiting lists in hospitals, where 414,395 cases were treated with a completion rate of 80%, in many medical specialties, the most prominent of which are: ( Oncology surgery, orthopedic surgery, eye surgery, kidney transplantation, liver transplantation, neurosurgery, vascular surgery, peripheral catheterization, open heart, cochlear implantation, cardiac catheterization, cerebral catheterization), in addition to active participation For university hospitals in 12 governorates in presidential initiatives for early detection and treatment of cancerous tumors, such as: “Women’s health, early detection of breast cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, cervical cancer, lung cancer, and colon cancer.
Dr. Omar Sharif Omar, Secretary of the Supreme Council of University Hospitals, confirmed that university hospitals participated with the Ministry of Health in implementing the president’s mandates in the areas of mental health, addiction treatment, diagnosis and treatment. Autism, reproductive health, and family planning. It also participated in the remote diagnosis initiative to provide medical services to remote areas. University hospitals provided 81,044 medical consultations and launched 535 medical convoys, benefiting 303,469 cases. 22 university hospitals also organized an awareness campaign on the occasion of “Pink October.” For early detection of breast cancer, pointing out that within the framework of strengthening Egyptian-German scientific cooperation in the field of oncology treatment, Dr. Ayman Ashour visited leading German university centers, such as: Siemens HealthNairs, and the Freiburg University Oncology Center, where they discussed activating cooperation. In the areas of early detection, treatment and integrated care in accordance with international standards, emphasis was also placed on developing infrastructure and improving training programs for medical personnel to meet the needs of the local and international market. With the aim of developing the oncology sector in Egypt and Africa, the activation of cooperation will begin with the opening of the new National Oncology Institute in 2025.
Dr. Ahmed Anani, the Minister’s Advisor for Health Policies, also indicated that the Ministry has signed international cooperation and partnership agreements with the Royal College of Surgeons. In Edinburgh; To improve the quality of medical services provided, in addition to signing cooperation protocols with the Ministry of Health and Population and the Directorate of Health Affairs in Dakahlia Governorate. A cooperation protocol was also signed with the General Secretariat of Mental Health, which includes cooperation in the field of training, scientific research and treatment of addiction. To enhance cooperation and exchange of experiences in the medical field, in addition to signing a protocol with the General Authority for Accreditation and Control, which includes cooperation in training quality teams and initial evaluation in preparation for university hospitals to meet the requirements for obtaining accreditation (GAHAR).
