Ukraine-Russia war latest: US cuts intelligence sharing with Kyiv – but Starmer insists Trump is ‘reliable ally’

The US has suspended its intelligence-sharing with Ukraine, cutting off the flow of vital information that has helped the country target Russian invaders.

But American officials say positive talks between Washington and Kyiv mean it may only be a short suspension.

President Donald Trump put military aid to Ukraine on hold on Tuesday. “We have taken a step back and are pausing and reviewing all aspects of this relationship,” national security adviser Mike Waltz said today.

Comments from top US officials suggest the decision is part of broader negotiations between Mr Trump and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky to negotiate a peace deal with Russia, and that intelligence could begin flowing to Ukraine again soon.

When prime minister Sir Keir Starmer was asked at Prime Minister’s Questions about reports that the US had barred the UK from sharing intelligence with Ukraine, he said: “I’ve always been clear that we need to ensure that the US, the UK, Europe and Ukraine are working together, but we must not choose between the US and Europe.”

Meanwhile, French president Emmanuel Macron warned Europe had to be ready for the US being “no longer by our side” during a televised statement on Wednesday night. Mr Macron said defence spending had to increase.
