Uber driver’s immense list of rules for passengers sparks fierce rideshare etiquette debate

An Uber driver’s immense list of rules for passengers has left the internet fiercely divided.

A Reddit user who goes by @LieutenantChonkster took to the thread called Mildly Infuriating on Friday to share a photo of the extensive regulations that were hung in the car during a recent rideshare trip.

According to the post, the list of rules – which was 11 paragraphs long – were taped on the backseat of the car on a laminated piece of paper.

They included everything from the volume of the radio to cell phone use, and they sparked a heated debate about rideshare etiquette in the comment section.

‘Greetings, I welcome you as my passenger. Here are clear etiquette rules I require to ensure a smooth ride for us,’ the note began.

First, the driver explained that while pets are ‘welcome,’ they ‘must remain either in your lap or on the floor at all times to avoid pet hair for the next passenger.’

‘Do your best to clean up after your pets to avoid cleanup fees,’ the note continued.

The next rule said, ‘Keep children safely seated all times. No kicking seats or playing with doors/windows to avoid tickets.’

After that, the driver explained that headphones were required if you planned on talking on the phone during the ride.

‘I do not want to hear speaker phone conversations,’ they added. ‘This goes for social media scrolling and all.’

The driver also said that they would not be turning their radio down for any phone calls.

‘I do not want to hear your corporate meetings or personal business dealings,’ they wrote.

‘Have them before entering or once exiting my car. No exceptions. Do not ask me to [turn down the radio].’

Next up, the driver explained that there would be no smoking or vaping, as well as eating or drinking allowed in their car, except for water.

They added that if any ‘mess’ is left behind, they will report it to Uber and charge a cleaning fee ‘starting at $50 no matter how small the mess is.’

‘Cover your nose/mouth when coughing or sneezing. If I notice you don’t, it will be reported,’ they added. ‘Wear a mask if you’re sick.

‘Wearing a seatbelt is up to you. You could potentially be ticketed however.’

They concluded the extensive list by writing, ‘If at any point you’re not enjoying your ride, refuse to respect my rules, or feel uncomfortable in any way, I will gladly pull over so that you may request another driver. Ask me to right away.

They also thanked the rider for ‘respecting their simple car etiquette rules.’

‘My Uber driver’s list of passenger rules,’ the Reddit user simply captioned the post.

Immediately, people rushed to the comment section to share their thoughts, and many argued about whether or not the list of regulations was ‘reasonable.’

‘The only unreasonable thing is the driver’s refusal to turn his music down or off,’ one person wrote.

‘Everything else is just common courtesy. Keep your pets/kids safe in their seats, don’t have your speakerphone on, don’t make a mess or leave smells in the car by eating/smoking/vaping. Reasonable.’

They added, however, that the note being written in ‘all caps’ and having a ‘preaching tone’ was ‘incredibly off-putting.’

‘I imagine this list might seem uptight and restrictive to some, but honestly, after reading it, I’m like, “That’s me whenever I’m in someone else’s car,”‘ someone else said.

‘The only one I have an issue with is him not turning down his music. I mean, it might be OK, but come on, man, I had a long night and I hate the f**king Eagles,’ joked another user.

‘I’m OK with all of this except the business calls and turning down the music,’ a fourth comment read.

‘You’re providing a service to someone paying you. You need to cater to any reasonable needs.

‘You’re not my friend giving me a ride, you’re the person providing a service I paid for.’

‘I agree most of those are polite things to do, but the tone and length of it (and unwillingness to adjust his radio) deserves an immediate one star rating,’ a fifth said.

‘The tone of it reads as “get in, sit down, shut the f**k up, and f**k you.” I mean, “If at any point you’re not enjoying the ride, tell me and I’ll pull over so you can get out.” Are you serious? I can’t believe how many people here are defending this.’

‘If I cannot make a work phone call in my Uber then I want a different Uber,’ announced a different person.

‘Gonna be at my destination before I finish reading it,’ joked someone else.
