U.S. Approves Storm Shadow Missiles for Ukraine to Strike Russia

Cairo: Hani Kamal El-Din

The United States has granted Ukraine permission to use Storm Shadow missiles to strike deep within Russia, as reported by The Times newspaper, citing a source from Downing Street.

According to the publication, this approval was granted by the outgoing administration of President Joe Biden. The U.S. approval is required because Storm Shadow missiles cannot be guided without American systems. This highlights the critical role the United States plays in supporting Ukraine, particularly in providing advanced military technology and systems that enhance the Ukrainian military’s capabilities in countering Russian attacks.

At the same time, the newspaper noted that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and members of the UK government would not make any official statements about the Storm Shadow missiles to avoid giving Russia a “strategic advantage” on the battlefield. However, Starmer’s allies assert that Storm Shadow strikes on Russian territory will not alter the course of the conflict in Ukraine, reflecting a cautious approach to handling this sensitive issue.

This statement follows remarks made by Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian president, who had previously stated that Western involvement in the Ukrainian conflict would lead to further escalation. He emphasized that such actions would complicate the situation and negatively impact regional stability. Russia has repeatedly warned that any additional military support from the West to Ukraine could push the situation into even more dangerous scenarios.
