In addition to the Eurofighter talks, Türkiye continues its technical discussions with US authorities regarding the purchase of F-16 fighter jets. The Turkish Ministry of Defense confirmed that the first payment related to this agreement has already been paid. In October 2021, Türkiye ordered 40 new F-16 Block 70 aircraft and upgraded 79 F-16 aircraft in its existing fleet to Block 70 level.
For years, Türkiye has aimed to modernize its air force, initially setting its sights on acquiring F-35 fighter jets from the United States. However, this plan changed dramatically in 2019 when the United States expelled Türkiye from the F-35 program due to Ankara’s decision to purchase the Russian S-400 air defense system. The move raised concerns about compliance with NATO standards and posed potential security risks. Consequently, Türkiye resorted to searching for alternative solutions to enhance its air capabilities.
