Tragic update after man was last seen jumping off a wall into the rain-swollen Beardmore Dam in Queensland

A man’s body has been recovered from a rain-swollen dam after he jumped off a wall into the water and failed to resurface.

Emergency services rushed to Beardmore Dam at St George, in Queensland’s southwest after a man was reported missing on Sunday afternoon.

It is understood the man, aged in his 40s, jumped from the dam wall and attempted to resurface but was pulled into a strong current.

His body was located in the water just before 6am on Tuesday.

The grim discovery comes after police, SES, swift water rescue crews and aerial teams searched for the missing man.

The search was called off late on Sunday before resuming at 6am on Monday, with police divers also called in to help.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Authorities have since pleaded with locals to leave the search to emergency services.

‘Police kindly ask locals to avoid attempting to search the area due to the potentially dangerous terrain and to trust that emergency services are doing everything they can to locate the missing man,’ police said in a statement.

After months of heavy rain, the dam is currently 102.4 per cent full.
