While Tom Cruise and writer/director Christopher McQuarrie are still immersed in finishing up their latest film, “Mission: Impossible” (for the record, it would be the eighth in the franchise, the follow-up to last year’s “Dead Reckoning” and whose release date has been postponed several times for various reasons), they also have one eye on the future and collaborations outside the world of Ethan Hunt and the IMF.
Once McQuarrie finishes prepping the next ‘Mission’ movie for a May 2025 release, it seems he’s ready to switch things up while Cruise remains the star.
The filmmaker has been preparing a new script, set in World War II, with ‘Dead Reckoning’/’Mission Eight’ co-writer Erik Jendresen, and According to World of ReelIt is called ‘Broadsword’.
Following the news of the Cruise, we have news of Daniel Richtman, the usual movie scooper that Henry Cavill and Marion Cotillard are in talks to join him. Cavill, of course, appeared alongside the actor in 2018’s ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout.’
What is the story of ‘Broadsword’?
The new film reportedly tells the story of an SOE (Special Operations Executive, a clandestine army fighting the enemy in Europe and Asia) operation in World War II. It follows a naval captain who crashes in France and becomes the only survivor. Against all odds, he must complete his mission amidst the chaos of war.
Of course, Cavill has some experience in covert operations during World War II thanks to his role this year in “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare,” directed by Guy Ritchie. Cotillard, meanwhile, appeared in “Allied” and Cruise in “Valkyrie,” written by McQuarrie.
What has McQuarrie said about the film?
Talking about one of the several mammoths Empire Spoiler Special Podcasts On the occasion of the release of ‘Dead Reckoning’, this is what McQuarrie had to say about the new film:
“There’s a movie that Cruise and I are thinking about doing next or in the near future, that Erik and I are developing together, that’s been dubbed on the Internet as ‘The Gnarly Movie.’ It’s the movie that everyone’s been asking for and that we want to make.”
When can we expect filming for ‘Broadsword’?
At this point, no one knows, but according to Production Weekly, ‘Broadsword’ will be shooting next year. Cruise has been in talks with ‘Birdman’ star Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu to star in his next film, so it’s possible that could happen next, followed by ‘Broadsword’.
