In what can be described as a Marvel Multiverse Madness-type situation, Wonka actor Timothée Chalamet crashed his own look-a-like contest, which was eventually shut down by police.
‘Twas a sunny arvo in New York City‘s Washington Square Park when a flock of men dawning sharp jaw lines, messy curly dark hair and hypnotising hazel eyes.
The city’s Timothée Chalamet lookalike contest had kicked off and a bunch of boys resembling the Dune actor — as well as fans who are obsessed with the bloke — gathered at the park in New York City’s Lower Manhattan on Sunday afternoon. The event was organised by YouTuber Anthony Po who offered a chance for skinny white men with brown curly hair to win a nifty $50 USD ($75 AUD).
Although the prize wasn’t huge, the event attracted hundreds of fans. Some were invited up to the makeshift stage to be quizzed on their proficiency of the French language and what the future holds with Kylie Jenner, who is reportedly dating Timothée.
However, minutes after the event kicked off, police attempted to tell the hoards of Chalamet Clones to disperse, before slapping Anthony and his team with a juicy $500 USD fine ($755) for holding an “unpermitted costume contest“.
Despite police instruction, the event still occurred due to the sheer volume of Timmys that rocked up.
It wasn’t long before fans noticed a man with a particularly uncanny resemblance to the Wonka star. After some whispers and cross-checking with Google Images, the hullabaloo really began when fans realised that was legit Timothée himself. He posed with a bunch of his own dupes, which sent his replicas into a slight frenzy.
“It started off as a silly joke and now it’s turned pandemonium,” Paige Nguyen, who is a producer for the YouTuber, told the Associated Press.
Although the real Timothée Chalamet put up a good fight, he was not the winner of the competition. Instead, the audience chose a 21-year-old bloke called Miles Mitchell who was dressed as Timothée’s iteration of Willy Wonka and tossed candy from a briefcase.
“I’m excited and I’m also overwhelmed,” Mitchell said.
“There were so many good look-alikes. It was really a toss-up.”
Wow, what a fever dream. I’m glad Timmy got to enjoy himself in one of the strangest environments imaginable.
