Tiger Woods’ ex-caddie announces book on all-conquering 12-year partnership that ended in bitter feud

Tiger Woods’ former caddie and close friend Steve Williams is set to release another tell-all book on his turbulent relationship with the golf legend.

Williams, considered by many as the greatest caddie in golf history, played an integral role in all but one of Woods’ first 14 major victories before the pair went their separate ways on bad terms in 2011.

Shortly after their acrimonious split, the New Zealander sparked controversy by making an extraordinary racist comment about his former partner, before they went over a decade without speaking despite Steve issuing a face-to-face apology.

That was until the iconic duo finally reconnected and put their 12-year feud behind them in 2023, almost two decades since Woods, now 49, served as the best man at Williams’ wedding.

Now, the 61-year-old is releasing a second book chronicling his rollercoaster ride with Tiger, which saw them claim 13 major championships together across a 12-year period.

Williams, who spoke less glowingly about Woods in his 2015 book ‘Out Of The Rough’, has joined forces with Golf Digest journalist Evin Priest to give the definitive account of his time caddying for the sporting great in ‘Together We Roared’.

As well as recalling their highs on the golf course, including Woods’ memorable shot on the 16th hole at the 2005 Masters to the famed Tiger Slam of 2000 and 2001, he also looks back at their close relationship away from the sport.

Amazon’s synopsis of the book says: ‘Steve goes behind the scenes of their on-course success and shows their friendship off the course, like Tiger caddying for Steve on his wedding day and Tiger giving a heartfelt best man speech.

‘Together We Roared offers an inside look at what it is like to ride alongside greatness and is a heartfelt ode to the friendship that produced one of the winningest duos in golf history.’

Williams began caddying for Woods in 1999 after being approached by the up-and-coming golf star’s then-coach Butch Harmon.

Over the next 12 years, the pair claimed four PGA Championships, three Open Championships and as many US Open and Masters titles as Tiger cemented a legacy as arguably the greatest golfer of all time.

Yet after Woods had sacked him in 2011, Williams celebrated wildly when his new employer, Adam Scott, won a World Golf Championship event shortly after.

He stunned the world by explaining his behavior with a shocking racist comment about his old friend: ‘My aim was to shove it right up that black a*******.’

Woods, however, said he had ‘no doubts’ in his belief that Williams did not hold racist views after he apologized to his face.

Shortly after, the legendary caddie made a series of bombshell allegations about Tiger in his explosive book ‘Out Of The Rough’ – claiming he was treated ‘like a slave’ and that he was known for his ‘bad temper’.

‘One thing that really p***** me off was how he would flippantly toss a club in the general direction of the bag, expecting me to go over and pick it up,’ he said.

‘I felt uneasy about bending down to pick up his discarded club – it was like I was his slave. The other thing that disgusted me was his habit of spitting at the hole if he missed a putt.’

But after reconciling Williams is releasing another book, 'Together We Roared', chronicling his relationship with Woods, after his more explosive 2015 autobiography 'Out Of The Rough'

Williams also went on to reveal how he felt let down by Woods in the wake of his infamous 2010 sex scandal, claiming he and his family were hounded by media and not protected by the golfer’s management team.

Yet now, after they finally reconciled and buried the hatchet two years ago, Williams has reminisced about their time together a lot more fondly in Together We Roared, which hits the shelves on April 1.

‘I’ve been feeling for a few years that I was sitting on a well of stories I believed golf and sports fans would love to hear,’ Williams told Golf Digest

‘As I grew into retirement, and life slowed down, I really began to appreciate what Tiger did for me, what I did for Tiger and how special those 12 years were. Those circumstances will never happen again.’
