There’s Nothing Scarier Than Home

Movie fiends, our time is now. We’re eating GOOD this year.

Sinners — a new vision of fear from director Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan — is hitting Aussie cinemas next month, and it’s going to have you on the literal edge of your seat.

What can I expect from Sinners?

The film follows troubled twin brothers, who are both played by the dazzling Michael B. Jordan. Set in the 1930s Jim Crow era, the pair return to their eerie, dark hellscape of a hometown in search of a clean slate.

If heading back to your hometown isn’t horrifying enough for you, then wait until brothers Smoke and Stack head to the local juke joint, where racial tensions and supernatural forces of evil come together to really turn the scare factor up.

The golden rule is that nothing is what it seems in Sinners, and I for one am HOOKED.

The film has a star-studded supporting cast, with the likes of Hailee Steinfeld, Li Jun Li, Jayme Lason, Wunmi Mosaku, and Jack O’Connell joining the fold.

The first trailer teased it, but the second one confirmed it — Sinners is coming for blood. Steinfeld and O’Connell’s characters are some of the many blood-sucking vampires we’ll be faced with in this thrilling extravaganza.

Considering how cagey Jordan and Coogler have been about the plot of the movie up until this point, this is a BIG MOMENT for us film aficionados. Sign us the hell up.

Who’s behind the magic of Sinners?

Sinners is written and directed by Ryan Coogler, the brains behind award-winning masterpieces like Black Panther and Creed. He’s no stranger to working with Jordan too, as this film marks their fifth collaboration. Talk about a dynamic duo.

Plus, a lot of Coogler’s Oscar-toting crew from his Black Panther days are a part of making the magic happen, including Director of Photography Autumn Durald Arkapaw, Production Designer Hannah Beachler, and Editor Michael P. Shawver.

Coogler himself has touted the film as an “exploration of the dichotomy of American culture”, highlighting the juxtaposing church and speakeasy as two prominent locations in the film.

“It’s actually the same type of environment,” Coogler said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “You see the same people. Saturday night, they’re acting crazy. Sunday morning, they’re acting holy.” Consider me locked in.

This will be the writer-director’s first foray into a new genre, so you can expect his signature touch of thrill mixed in with mystery and supernatural goodness. Also don’t forget the vampires! SOOOOO many vampires.

There’s no place to see blockbusters like on the big screen. Catch Sinners in cinemas across the country on April 17. Hold onto your hats (and your popcorn).
