A fan of The Weeknd is going viral on TikTok after he ran on stage and interrupted the musician’s show at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium on Saturday.
Footage of the stage invasion was shared by the concertgoer himself, who goes by the handle Pyjama Man, on Monday.
It shows the overexcited fan flexing his parkour chops by evading the extensive security team and mounting the stage, before sharing a brief embrace with the pop star and being escorted away by the trailing guards.
Coincidentally, The Weeknd was performing his song “Out Of Time” during the interruption, which could’ve made for an uncanny soundtrack if the fan had more sinister plans.
Thankfully, the musician seemed only somewhat startled, letting out a tense giggle and cautiously backing away, perhaps saving his (nervous) tears for another day.
Pyjama Man (which incidentally doubles as the title of my memoir) claimed in the TikTok caption that he stormed on stage and told The Weeknd to “let me stay on the stage with you”.
Replying to a separate comment, he said the “Blinding Lights” singer “was happy towards me and wanted me to stay, but the bodyguard security interrupted”.
I think we’re missing who the real interrupter was in this scenario, and it’s probably not the security team.
Pyjama Man, whose real name is Johnson Wen, was later interviewed on the Fifi, Fev & Nick radio show, and said his interruption was pre-planned because The Weeknd is “the biggest artist on Spotify” and he had been “daydreaming of going on that stage”.
“I didn’t care about the consequences,” Wen said, “I was going to do it even though it was really bad.”
As a result of the incident, Wen said he could face a lifetime concert ban or a substantial fine up to $10,000.
The Weeknd stans were quick to criticise the stage invader while reacting to the footage, with one user saying Wen “did not eat” and that the interruption is “not a flex”.
Others described the incident as “disrespectful” and “horrible”, particularly given The Weeknd’s openness about his struggles with anxiety, and called on the singer to hire a better security team.
It’s not the first time the fan — whose TikTok bio reads “Troll, Prankster, Memer” — has had a case of Eventus Interruptus.
Last year, he was identified as the streaker who stormed onto the pitch during the India vs Australia World Cup cricket final in Ahmedabad, while sporting a rainbow flag and a “Free Palestine” shirt.
He has also taken credit as the streaker who appeared during the FIFA Women’s World Cup final last year, and claims to be responsible for the delayed start to the men’s 100m sprint final at the Paris Olympics in August. The man gets around.
The Weeknd will next perform at Sydney’s Accor Stadium as part of his recently rescheduled Australian After Hours Til Dawn tour.
What’s the bet Wen is already planning another onstage meet-cute?
