The press service of the Armenian President reported that Armenian President Armen Sarkissian submitted his resignation without completing his term of office.
According to the statement, the president cannot use most of his potential to solve systematic domestic and foreign policy tasks. He believes that today Armenia is a presidential republic in form, but not in substance.
Sargsyan said: “I thought for a long time and decided to leave the post of president of the republic after active work for nearly four years. This decision is not emotional at all, it follows a certain logic. The president does not have the tools to influence the radical processes of domestic and foreign policy at this difficult time for the country and the people. …when national unity is required, the institution of the president should not be the object of gossip, gossip and conspiracy theories, thus distracting the public from the most important issues.”
He stressed that the country now needs well-thought-out and targeted measures. Otherwise, we, the Armenians of the whole world, will not achieve the goal of our mission, will find ourselves on the margins of history.
Sargsyan said in the statement: We no longer have the right to make mistakes!
Sargsyan also expressed his hope that Armenia and Azerbaijan could establish a stable peace through settlements.
Sargsyan took office as Armenia’s president in the spring of 2018. After the 2015 constitutional reforms, the country switched to a parliamentary form of government. Thus, the powers of the president are ceremonial.
