This year, we’re all about doing more with less, which is why we’re big on makeup skincare hybrids. While not entirely new, the skincare-makeup space is rife with innovation, and there’s countless new products launching that combine the characteristics of makeup (coverage, pigment) with complexion-first ingredients, like butters, oils, antioxidants and hydrators. Whether you’re a beauty minimalist or just striving for your healthiest skin, beauty hybrids are the future, and a trend we’re very much on board with.
What are makeup skincare hybrids?
In short, makeup skincare hybrids are products that fall between the two categories. Think the best of both worlds: tint, protection, nourishment, moisture, even long-term benefits such as a brighter skin tone or stronger lashes. The idea is to bridge the gap between makeup and skincare, equating to fewer steps and a healthier complexion overall. It also takes away from the old skin wisdom sleeping in your makeup is a cardinal skin (however, we do still believe in the double cleanse).
Makeup with skincare benefits (or vice versa) also typically means lightweight coverage and glow. If you’re into a fresh, no-makeup makeup kind of look, you’ll love it.
Our favourite formulas that blur the lines between skincare and makeup, below:
Westman Atelier Vital Skin Complexion Drops
This formula is as if skin tint and face oil had a baby. It’s light and glowy, packed with nourishing tsubaki oil, but also tone-correcting pigments for healthy-looking skin.
O-Bloos Rosi Drops by Drunk Elephant
We would be remiss not to mention our main complexion enhancer, cheek tint. Rosi Drops bring your skin back to life, containing fatty acids, omegas and antioxidants to illuminate the face. This product can be used on its own or added into moisturiser tints for an amped-up radiance.
Rationale Beautiful Light Cream Highlighter
This magic compact affords sun protection, hydration, nourishment and a pearl-tinted sheen in one easy product. Pat it on top of your all-over sunscreen or makeup for skin that looks like it’s lit up from within.
Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint
With squalane, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, this tinted serum covers all your bases. It’s super dewy, but provides enough coverage to even out the look of marks, scars and uneven skin tone.
Clarins Lip Comfort Oil
What’s unique about this lip oil is that it has the glossy sheen of a makeup formula, but actually comforts dry, chapped or uncomfortable lips. It’s nourishing but non-sticky, and has imparts just enough colour for easy no-makeup makeup.
Kosas Revealer Concealer
This cult concealer instantly covers up dark circles, while the inclusion of caffeine and peptides brighten and plump the skin. It’s super creamy, so it won’t crease or cling to dry spots. It works equally as well under the eyes as it does on a blemish.
Lanolips Tinted Lip Balm
The best ever lip balm with a pinky tint — what’s not to love? Lanolin is a fatty acid recognised by the skin, meaning it penetrates the moisture barrier for long-lasting comfort (i.e. you won’t have to reapply every hour).
Glossier Future Dew
What’s incredible about this product is the way it leaves the skin gleaming, like you’ve just had a facial. I love the way it affords dewiness without feeling slippery or greasy, as well. It does contain a blend of oils, as well as squalane for long-lasting skin hydration.
Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist
Not only will this face mist set your foundation, but it will cover you with a veil of micro-fine botanical oils and fermented Japanese botanicals for plump, cared-for skin.
Dr. Jart+ Cicapair Tiger Grass Colour Correcting Treatment
This K-beauty face cream applies with a greenish tint, but adapts to your skin tone, neutralising redness, while the centella asiatica actually soothes inflammatory triggers. It’s perfect for anyone prone to flushing, rosacea or sensitivity.
Merit Clean Lash
This is a tubing formula, meaning it coats each individual lash with a little ‘tube’, decreasing the risk of smudging and flaking. But further to that, it’s enriched with vitamin like panthenol to support long, strong eyelashes (without mascara).
