The Ministries of Culture and Higher Education launch the second session of the competition "Translate..create"
Within the framework of the initiative of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, to encourage and discover those distinguished in the field of translation from scientific competencies in Egyptian universities, the Ministry of Culture – represented by the National Center for Translation – is launching, in cooperation with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research – Represented by the Supreme Council of Universities – the second session of the “Translate…Innovate” competition. (In conjunction with the celebration of the birth anniversary of Sheikh Rifa’a Al-Tahtawi).
The "Translate…create" competition. It is a competition dedicated to translating important books that represent an addition to the Arabic library, from different languages into the Arabic language. Participants in the competition prepare proposals to translate serious cultural books that are useful to wide sectors of society, and submit them to the Center to select the best books based on a set of clear criteria, including: It was then published within the publications of the National Center for Translation.
It is worth noting that the Ministry of Culture, represented by the National Center for Translation, launched the first session of the competition, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Scientific Research in 2020, and (64) teams from Public universities, and the number of business languages participating in the competition reached (11) languages: (Urdu – Spanish – German – English – Russian – Swahili – Chinese – Persian – French – Korean – Latin) After examining and scientifically evaluating these works by specialized committees, it was decided that the following three works would win: the book “Environmental Linguistics and the Stories We Live By.” Which was presented by the Ain Shams University team, consisting of members from the faculties of (Girls, Languages, and Arts) and under the supervision of Dr. Dina Ahmed Abdel Aziz Ramadan, and the book “Sustainable Knowledge: A Proposed Theory of Interpersonality” Which was presented by the team of the English Language Department at the Faculty of Arts, Port Said University and under the supervision of Dr. Morsi Hassan Muhammad Ali, and the book “The Village” Which was submitted by the team of the Urdu Language Department at the Faculty of Languages and Translation at Al-Azhar University and under the supervision of Professor Dr. Ahmed Muhammad Abd al-Rahman.
The center purchased the intellectual property rights for those works and contracted with the winning translators from the team members, and the three books were issued as part of the publications of the National Center for Translation. The center held a celebration for each of the winning books to celebrate the participants’ victory and encourage Egyptian universities to participate in subsequent rounds of the competition.
General rules for participation:
1. Participation in the competition is limited to graduate students and researchers from Egyptian public or private universities.
2. Colleges/departments wishing to participate in the competition shall form a team of their distinguished students and researchers, provided that the number of team members shall be two to three members, in addition to the team supervisor.
3. The work team may be from two different departments, and priority is given to teams composed of language departments and departments with other cross-disciplinary specializations, according to the nature of the work proposed for translation.
4. The department participates with only one proposal.
5. Contestants submit their proposals in any of the following languages: (English – French – Spanish – German – Chinese – Russian – Italian – Japanese – Swahili – Urdu – Turkish – Hebrew – Persian).
6. Translation proposals must be from the original language, and the proposed works must not have been previously translated.
7. It is preferable that translation proposals for foreign works are in the public domain, meaning they do not have translation rights.
8. The winning teams in the first edition of the competition are not entitled to apply again.
9. The selected teams are not entitled to publish the translation or any part thereof during or after the competition period.
