The Minister of Supply explains the Ministry’s efforts to provide basic commodities and control prices in the markets

Dr. Sherif Farouk, Minister of Supply, reviewed the Ministry’s efforts in the field of providing basic goods to citizens and maintaining price control in the markets.

 

 The Minister of Supply said that the Ministry has taken many measures. During the past three months, including the sustainability of contracts to provide strategic goods, which led to quantitative and price stability of food commodities in the markets and confronting monopolistic practices. He pointed to the agreement and coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture on the mechanisms for pricing sugarcane and beets for sugar factories in the 2025 season, with an increase of 25% over last year’s prices, so that the price of supplying a ton of sugarcane would be (2,500) pounds, and the price of supplying a ton of beets would be (2,400) pounds, in support of the Egyptian farmer and to stimulate production. local, to achieve self-sufficiency in sugar. 3. Expanding the supply of meat in cooperation with the Egyptian Sudanese Company, where (120) thousand heads are supplied annually, which are quarantined and a monthly stock is formed in quantities exceeding (20) thousand heads of cows that are continuously present inside the quarries, and any quantities that are consumed are replaced in the local market to become permanent. The balance inside the quarries is (20) thousand heads of live cows.  

He referred to cooperation and coordination with the authorities, including cooperation with the “Union of Chambers of Commerce” The Vegetables and Fruits Division to control and reduce prices by increasing their supply and cooperating with the “Armed Forces Appointments Department.” To provide some of their needs for food commodities and to contribute to supplying the sisterly countries of Sudan and Palestine with some strategic commodities based on the directives of the political leadership.

The Minister pointed to the signing of a protocol between: "The Holding Company for Food Industries and the Decent Life Foundation" To cooperate in providing goods and meat at its outlets, and to establish permanent commodity exhibitions throughout the year similar to the Hello Ramadan Schools exhibitions, in coordination with the Ministry of Local Development and the Governorates and the General Federation of Chambers of Commerce to allocate lands with suitable areas. He pointed to coordination with the Egyptian Future Agency for Sustainable Development in various areas of food security, the most important of which is increasing storage capacities, supplying strategic crops, and developing food industry companies. He pointed out the intensification of the supervisory role of the Ministry, and all the supply and internal trade directorates in the governorates at the republic level:

Continuous coordination

The Minister of Supply mentioned the efforts of coordination between the Ministry of Supply And internal trade, the supply and internal trade directorates in the governorates, and the regulatory agencies, most notably (the General Administration of Supply Investigations, the Consumer Protection Agency, the Competition Protection and Prevention of Monopolistic Practices Agency, and the National Food Safety Authority), in order to tighten control over markets, control prices, and follow up on the extent of compliance of all activities. Commercial and supply services at the republic level, in accordance with the provisions of the law.

He continued: “These efforts resulted in the following: – Issuing reports with a total number of (406,394) reports on violations committed as of the beginning of the year 2024. – Seizing (19) thousand tons. Of the various food commodities, most of them are goods of unknown origin and goods resulting from recycling. He pointed to the issuance of a set of ministerial decisions and directives to reorganize the work of the Ministry, its affiliated entities, and supply directorates in the governorates and supply and commercial activities, including: (43) decisions to reconstitute the boards of directors of some companies affiliated with the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade, and to conduct transfers of some directors and agents of the directorates to raise the level and efficiency. Working on it, completing the procedures for filling positions in the organizational structure of the Ministry and the directorates, and terminating the service of occupants of leadership positions for those who have reached the legally prescribed age. – Resolution No. (142) dated 8/13/2024 to form the Supreme Committee to examine applications submitted by members of parliament, owners of ration activities, and citizens with ration cards. – Resolution No. (150) dated 8/25/2024 to form a committee to review the work cycle and accounting procedures among the parties to the ration system and its governance with the aim of raising its efficiency. – Resolution No. (171) of 10/8/2024 regarding the controls and rules for trading some strategic commodities, which are: " Oil, beans, rice, milk, sugar, pasta, white cheese" It is prohibited to withhold it from circulation, hide it, not offer it for sale, or refrain from selling it in any way. – Resolution No. (175) of 10/15/2024 regulating the work system of municipal bakeries, including their rights and obligations. – Ministerial Directive No. (25) dated 8/1/2024 to increase the cost of manufacturing a loaf of bread in order to preserve the stability of the subsidized local bread system and the rights of bakery owners. – Ministerial Directive No. (29) dated 8/31/2024 to tighten control and follow-up on the availability of all goods, work to control prices, monitor markets, decisively address violators, and take the necessary legal measures in this regard. – Ministerial Directive No. (30) dated 10/15/2024 organizing the withdrawal of samples of wheat, flour, and fine bran from mills to verify their compliance with standard specifications.
