The Minister of Irrigation praises the strategic partnership between Egypt and the European Union, especially in the field of water

The Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Dr. Hani Sweilem, praised the distinguished cooperation and strategic partnership between Egypt and the European Union, especially in the field of water.

This came during a meeting held by the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, today, Monday, with the European Union Ambassador. In Egypt, Angelina Eichorst discussed ways to strengthen the water partnership between Egypt and the European Union, and discussed proposals for developing strategic work plans 2024-2027, in accordance with the Ministry’s priorities, and joint coordination in The activities of the eighth Cairo Water Week, scheduled to be held in October 2025.

Sweilem pointed to the European Union’s support for Egypt in promoting important areas such as raising irrigation efficiency, water reuse, water treatment techniques, and adaptation to climate change. This contributed to supporting Egypt’s efforts to confront the challenges of water scarcity and food security. This cooperation culminated in the signing of the “Declaration of Water Partnership between Egypt and the European Union.” During the activities of the Climate Conference (COP28), which was held in 2023, it aims to support water security in Egypt by achieving sustainable management of water resources, promoting dialogue and exchanging experiences that enhance the technological, scientific and administrative capabilities in Egypt and the European Union, and building capabilities in the field of integrated management of water resources based on To the principles of equality and mutual benefit.

He pointed out that there are several projects being implemented in cooperation with a number of European Union countries, such as the third national drainage program, and the project to improve water quality in a drain. Kitchener, the “Modernizing Irrigation Technologies to Improve the Livelihoods of Small Farmers in Upper Egypt” project, the Integrated Sectoral Approach (JISA) project, and the project to monitor land and water productivity through remote sensing.

The Minister explained that with limited resources Water, Egypt seeks to raise the efficiency of water use through many projects and procedures that fall under the umbrella of the second generation irrigation system (2.0), as the Ministry is currently rehabilitating water facilities and studying automatic control of their operation to improve water management and distribution. Studying the use of environmentally friendly materials in rehabilitating canals, expanding modern irrigation projects, in accordance with the Ministry’s priorities, expanding water treatment and reuse projects, studying water desalination techniques for intensive food production, and directing the Ministry to implement governance principles and modernize the management system by relying on modern technology. Digitization and reliance on artificial intelligence applications.

The position of the “European Green Facility” initiative was also discussed during the meeting. Under the umbrella of the “Team Europe Initiative” Which was signed during the activities of the Seventh Cairo Water Week between Egypt and the European Union, where Dr. Sweilem pointed out that this initiative represents a vital step in dealing with the challenges facing Egypt, especially in the water and agricultural sectors, as they are considered two reliable pillars in achieving sustainable development in Egypt.
