The Minister of Irrigation chairs the fourteenth meeting of the Executive Committee of the Council of African Ministers of Water (AMCO)

Dr. Hani Sweilem, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, chaired the fourteenth meeting of the Executive Committee of the Council of African Ministers of Water (AMCO) within the activities of the Seventh Cairo Water Week and the Ninth African Water Week..

Sweilem expressed Egypt’s pride in hosting Water Week. The ninth African Water Week, which is an important platform for cooperation and knowledge exchange at a time when the African continent faces multiple water challenges, and that the theme of this year’s African Water Week is “Putting water and sanitation at the heart of achieving the 2063 Agenda for the Africa we want.” It is in line with our shared aspirations for a prosperous African continent, as access to clean water and sanitation is not just a basic human right, but rather the foundation that enables us to build healthy societies, prosperous economies, and sustainable development.

The Minister paid tribute to the founders of the Council of Ministers. African Water, as their continuous efforts played a vital role in establishing AMCO as a unique continental organization that supports the effective management of water resources on the continent, the provision of water and sanitation services, and the strengthening of Africa’s global position.

Since the founding of AMCO, Egypt has always been keen to play an active role in Strengthening cooperation across the continent. Egypt has continued to strengthen its partnerships with African brothers in various fields of cooperation. Egypt remains positively involved in all AMCO activities, supporting the common vision of sustainable water management in Africa. At the same time, AMCO enjoys an outstanding reputation among partners and donors with its firm commitment to transparency. And accountability, which was crucial in attracting large investments to the African continent, which requires continuing to maintain this credibility by complying with the highest standards of transparency and integrity, strengthening governance frameworks, and addressing any institutional gaps that may hinder the effectiveness of its functions, in addition to implementing strong financial controls to ensure its operation under clear and accountable mechanisms, With the Council and the Technical Advisory Committee assuming a proactive role in providing strategic direction and supervision of AMCO’s operations, looking forward to the lessons learned from successful governance models implemented by similar organizations.

Suwailem added that he was keen during his period as president of AMCO to represent the collective voice of the African continent in The Tenth World Water Forum in Bali, Indonesia, during which the Ministerial Declaration on “Water for Shared Prosperity” was issued, calling for the continuation of African efforts in this regard to achieve a future characterized by water security and prosperity for all, calling for accelerating work to finalize the African water vision after 2025, where it will work This vision serves as a roadmap for collective action in the coming years.

He pointed out that the results of the ninth African Water Week represent a vital contribution to shaping Africa’s future vision in the field of water, ensuring comprehensive water security that deals with climate change across the continent, and strengthening Africa’s commitments. On the global stage, and building new milestones through the 2026 UN Water Conference, we are proud to be key partners with Senegal to ensure that Africa’s voice is widely heard.
