The Minister of Agriculture discusses with his Senegalese and Somali counterparts enhancing joint cooperation
Alaa Farouk, Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, discussed, on the sidelines of his participation in the Extraordinary African Union Summit for Agricultural Development, which is currently being held in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, with his counterpart in Senegal and Somalia, the strengthening of joint agricultural cooperation, in a way that contributes to achieving sustainable development in the African continent.
During his meeting with Dr. Maboba Jang, Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Livestock of Senegal, the two ministers stressed the depth of the historical relations between The two countries and joint cooperation in many fields, especially in the agricultural sector, expressing their aspiration to strengthen this cooperation in a way that serves the interests of the two brotherly peoples.
The two sides stressed the importance of cooperation including increased exchange of Experience in the field of sustainable agriculture, training opportunities, developing modern agricultural technologies, enhancing agricultural scientific research, digital transformation in the field of agriculture, and transferring modern technologies in this field, as well as increasing opportunities for trade exchange of agricultural crops between the two countries, and overcoming obstacles that facing it.
The Senegalese side requested to benefit from the experience of agricultural research institutions in Egypt to develop new varieties of crops, especially strategic ones: wheat, corn and rice, and improve their productivity, with the possibility of supporting Egypt. To establish a center of excellence for seed production in Senegal, as well as benefit from Egyptian experience in the field of establishing warehouses and grain storage sheds, through a joint project implemented in tripartite cooperation between Egypt, Senegal and the Bank. The Senegalese side also expressed its desire to support Egypt in cooperation in the field of importing nitrogen fertilizers, as it was agreed to hold a meeting at the technical level, to formulate points of cooperation and communication with Concerned authorities in Egypt to provide Senegal’s fertilizer needs, in addition to the Agricultural Research Center in Egypt receiving a technical delegation to learn about modern and advanced technologies, laboratory equipment, as well as crop seed production technologies. Farouk also met with Mohamed Abdi Hayer, Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation of the Federal Republic of Somalia, to discuss enhancing joint agricultural cooperation.

The two sides discussed joint cooperation in agricultural research, especially in the areas of climate change and reducing their negative effects on agricultural activities, as well as digital transformation in the field of agriculture, animal production and breed improvement, as well as developing agricultural extension and awareness-raising. The two ministers also stressed the importance of working to exchange experiences, so that Somalia benefits from Egyptian expertise in the field of agriculture, especially in managing water resources, improving crop productivity, combating pests and diseases, and sending Egypt’s experts sent Egyptian agriculturalists to Somalia to provide technical support to Somali farmers, as well as organizing training courses for Somali farmers and specialists in various agricultural fields, at the Egyptian International Center for Agriculture in Agricultural Relations. The two sides also discussed ways to increase the flow of agricultural products between the two countries, and opportunities for trade exchange of Egyptian agricultural crops, as it was agreed to hold a joint meeting at the technical level between the two sides, to discuss this.
