Buckle up, baddies!!! There’s a huge twist coming to this season of Married At First Sight (MAFS), and let me tell ya, we’ve never seen anything like this on the show so far.
As we inch towards the final vows and attempt to decipher which couples might make it out of the experiment, the MAFS big dogs behind the scenes have ensured one more challenge to make sure that we have absolutely no clue what will happen at the final commitment ceremony.
Before the season began, MAFS expert John Aiken and executive producers Alexandra Spurway and John Walsh flagged to PEDESTRIAN.TV that a huge, never-before-seen twist was coming. Now, thanks to the Daily Mail, we know what that twist is.
The twist is a challenge called ‘Is the grass greener on the other side?’ and will see the participants given a tempting opportunity.
In the coming weeks, we’ll see the brides and grooms receive a letter. Inside the letter, the experts have provided a second, back-up spouse for each of them.
While the offer is incredibly tantalising — especially for those on the rocks — each contestant must decide if they want to stick with their current partner and keep the letter closed or take a sneaky peek.
According to a source, this challenge saw the downfall of particular marriages.
“The participants were asked if they wanted to meet their back-up… It was fucked up because even happy couples were strongly encouraged to ‘explore their options’,” the insider told the Daily Mail.
“This twist ruined marriages. Some couples ended things right then and there. It was heartbreaking to watch. They’ve totally given up on this being about love stories.”
To make matters even more explosive, the brides and grooms were separated while they decided whether to find out who their backup spouse was.
“Once they made their choice, they had no idea if their partner had said yes or no,” the source revealed.
“It created chaos. The whole thing was designed to rattle them, and it worked. Some people said no without hesitation, while others decided to meet their back-up and instantly regretted it.”

Before the season kicked off, PEDESTRIAN.TV sat down with some of the big dogs behind MAFS who dished about the upcoming challenge.
“We’ve got this final test week challenge which is a first for MAFS,” John Aiken said, noting that the challenge will “expose certain couples”.
“There is a choice that the individual has to make, and it is make or break for their relationship,” revealed executive producer Alexandra Spurway.
“It tests our couples in a way that makes them think about whether or not they’re going to make it work on the outside.”
“It has a big impact on one or more couples,” added fellow executive producer John Walsh, who refused to give more specific numbers.
Apparently, the contestants were completely devastated and infuriated by the addition of the ‘Is the grass greener on the other side?’ challenge.
“Some people felt betrayed just knowing their partner had even been given a back-up option,” the insider continued.
“And for those who chose to meet their backup, it created tension — not just in their relationships but within the whole group dynamic. It was like a grenade went off.”
Ouchie mama.
Although the backup challenge seems like a shock, it does make sense. No wonder Lauren Hall and Eliot Donovan were able to come back to the experiment with new partners so seamlessly — the experts must have had them locked in from the get-go!
