The world chess championship match began in Singapore on November 25. The champion title is defended by Chinese grandmaster Ding Liren. The contender for the world championship is grandmaster from India Dommaraju Gukesh.
Before the start of the match, most specialists expressed an opinionthat the challenger is the favorite in the match. Gukesh has beaten the strongest opponents in the Candidates Tournament this year and is showing consistent play, while Dean has suffered defeats in tournaments. However, in first batch it was the champion who won in brilliant style, playing with black pieces.
There are 14 games; if the score is tied, the winner will be determined in a tiebreaker of games with a short time control.
The match generated huge interest in Asian countries, especially in India. For the first time, two representatives of the Asian continent met in the final of the world chess championship. Rivals play out record prize fund – $2.5 million.
Ding Liren became world champion last year by beating Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi after former champion Magnus Carlsen, still the world number one, refused to defend his title.
Gukesh Dommaraju, if he wins, will become the youngest world champion in history – he is 18 years old.
- The match is organized by the world chess federation FIDE. Russian chess players have the right to take part in international tournaments, but do not play under the national flag, but under the FIDE flag – such restrictions were imposed after the invasion of Ukraine.
