If you have internet access, it’s likely that by now you’ve heard of Moo Deng (translation: “bouncy pork”), the two-month-old pygmy hippopotamus who lives in at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand.
The adorable baby hippo went viral this month after the zoo posted some pictures of her online. She soon became an overnight sensation, with the number of daily visitors to the zoo recently doubling as a result of her international fame.
It’s easy to see why Moo Deng has captured so many hearts across the world. Not only is she lovely and rotund, but she’s also perpetually screaming – a relatable queen. As our political editor James Greig wrote in an incisive op-ed published earlier this week: “She has become a canvas on which the world can project its suffering […] When Moo Deng screams, she screams for everyone. She has given expression to the inchoate rage and dissatisfaction of life under late capitalism.”
