The Assistant Foreign Minister presents Egypt’s vision on the right to food before the Arab Forum on Food Systems in Amman
Ambassador Amr Al-Juwaili, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Multilateral Affairs and International Security, affirmed that the right to adequate food is guaranteed under international human rights law, as stipulated in both the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, noting Egypt’s support for implementing the principles. This came during the participation of Ambassador Amr Al-Juwaili, in his capacity as the National Coordinator of the Food Systems Summits, in a session " The right to food as a catalyst for food system transformation. Within the Regional Forum on Food Systems in the Arab Region in Amman. Al-Juwaili said, “Achieving food systems requires a multi-dimensional approach, including international coordination between various international agencies, organizations and mechanisms, and national coordination between relevant ministries and government agencies,” referring to Egypt’s experience in national legislation, where the constitution explicitly stipulates the right to adequate food, and it is committed to The state hereby secures food resources for all citizens, and protects and increases the agricultural area. He reviewed Egypt’s efforts to cooperate with UN organizations to respond to the unprecedented humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip as a result of the Israeli aggression, stressing the importance of the United Nations and its agencies playing their role in assessing and addressing food and agricultural security requirements and enabling access to adequate food for the Palestinian people. He pointed to Egypt’s cooperation with the Special Rapporteur on the right to food, stressing the concept of “food sovereignty.” Which was approved by the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and Other Workers in Rural Areas, demanding that the global trading system be directed towards ensuring the right to food, in addition to reforming the international financial structure to provide more affordable financing options for the countries most in need, and ensuring the availability of resources to support agricultural development. sustainable development, and enhancing food security.
In this context, the Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Coordinator of the Food Systems Summits stated that national coordination is being intensified in preparation for the “Moment of Evaluation of the Food Systems Summit +4” meeting. Scheduled to be held in 2025, Egypt will benefit from the relevant United Nations projects “Promoting sustainable and resilient food and nutrition systems in Egypt.”
It should be noted that the Regional Forum on Food Systems in the Arab Region has witnessed Egyptian participation. Distinguished through the two speeches delivered by the Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Alaa Farouk, and the Minister of Supply and Internal Trade, Dr. Sherif Farouk, in the high-level dialogue session on policies to transform food systems, with the participation of a number of relevant Arab ministers.
