The Assistant Foreign Minister confirms Egypt’s support for the sovereignty, unity and stability of Somalia

 Ambassador Ashraf Sweilem, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for African organizations and groupings, affirmed Egypt’s full support for the sovereignty, unity, stability and security of Somalia, highlighting the growing bilateral relations between the two countries, and the fundamental Egyptian contributions to rebuilding the Somali economy and national institutions, within the framework of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s leadership in the file. The Assistant Foreign Minister explained that Somalia is going through a turning point in its history in which the Somali state seeks to confirm its ownership of reconstruction and peace-building efforts, stressing the importance of dealing with the process of The transition from the Atmis mission to the new African Union mission AUSSOM from this perspective, taking into account the complex political, security and development challenges facing the sister country. 

 

The Assistant Foreign Minister noted that Despite the progress achieved by the Somali side in its war against terrorism, and many other levels, it still needs the support of friends, the African Union and the international community, to allow for a smooth and rapid transition. of the responsibilities of the African Union Mission and the Somali state, noting in this regard Egypt’s support for the results of the meeting held in Mogadishu at the beginning of this month, which discussed the exit of the Atmis mission, and accelerating the pace of launching and activating the new African Union mission, in consultation with the countries that have expressed a willingness to contribute forces, including Including Egypt. 

 

Ambassador Ashraf Sweilem stressed that the decisions that The decisions that the Council will take over the next few weeks will have broad implications for the security and stability of Somalia and the entire region, which is what the member states of the African Union are aware of, and which have expressed their willingness to contribute significantly to financing the new mission from the benefits of the African Peace Fund, in response to the tireless efforts made by Egypt during its presidency. To the Peace and Security Council last October, she also chaired the Union Budget Subcommittee  

 

He stressed that the ball is now in the court of the international community to provide the necessary financial resources to finance the mission, including through the implementation of Security Council Resolution No. 2719 regarding financing African peace support missions from United Nations resources.
