A Hawaii surfer is lucky to be alive after being chewed up and spat out by a monster wave that was captured in dramatic video.
Ty Simpson-Kane was the surfer caught on camera in the incredible moment he took on the huge wave on Peahi beach, also known as Jaws, on Maui’s north shore.
The world-famous beach is a hotspot for surfers and known for its super-sized waves.
The video showed Simpson-Kane being thrown from his board and flipped upside down five times before he vanished beneath the water surface.
Instagram account fishbowldiaries, run by Sofie and Paul, caught the incredible moment on camera.
The surfer was brought to shore by safety teams. He shared his gratitude on social media afterwards, describing it as one of the heaviest ‘wipe outs’ he’d ever experienced.

In the video he managed to hold his ground before his surf board caught under the water. He was then flipped almost five times before the wave crashed over him entirely
‘That was so heavy. Hope you’re ok! I’m guessing you are coz you carried on surfing. Lots more stills and clips of you,’ said fishbowldiaries to Simpson-Kane.
‘I’m doing good. Just a lot of water in the sinus. Thank you so much, can’t wait to see them,’ Simpson-Kane responded.
He later posted and said: ‘There are no words that can truly describe the energy and the power that was surging. Pe’ahi was alive in all her glory and I still can’t believe I was able to get a wave paddling.
‘Thank you to my family and my team for supporting me. I couldn’t do it without your guys love and support…to everyone that has called texted and messaged me to check in on me thank you.’
Commenters were equally impressed and worried for the surfer.
‘Gnarliest wipeout of the day??…..gnarliest of the year to say the least,’ one said.
Another wrote: ‘What a bomb and what a wipeout!! I’m so happy you’re alive buddy!!!’
Despite the terrifying moment, Simpson-Kane is ready for his next wave and wrote, ‘We’ve only just begun!’
