Taliban ban celebration of Valentine’s Day in Kabul

An attempt to celebrate Valentine’s Day in the Afghan capital, Kabul, led to aggressive actions by Taliban representatives.

For the past fifteen years, Valentine’s Day has been unofficially celebrated in Afghanistan. It was celebrated mainly by young, educated Afghans from the wealthy sectors of Kabul’s population. However, it was not possible to celebrate Eid in 2022

The Taliban descended on Flower Street, where they traditionally celebrated Valentine’s Day, and drove all customers out of the shops. Store owners have been warned. Several people were arrested.

According to representatives of the current Afghan authorities, there is no similar holiday in Islam. Likewise, Valentine’s Day is not celebrated in the traditions of the peoples living in Afghanistan.
