Sweden school shooting latest: Calls for changes to gun laws as police refuse to rule out racist motivation
Sweden’s former prime minister has called for changes to gun laws after 10 people were massacred in the country’s worst ever mass shooting on Tuesday.
“What we already know is that there are too many guns that are available in our society, so we have to do something about that,” Magdalena Andersson, the leader of opposition Social Democrats, told The Guardian.
Ms Andersson, who was prime minister for 10 months until October 2022, also called on the EU to curb social media platforms serving too much violence to the youth.
It comes after Swedish Police confirmed they are not ruling out the possibility of a racist motivation behind the killing, carried out by suspected 35-year-old gunman Rickard Andersson, named in Swedish media and by a police source.
Asked if they had ruled out a racist motive, the force told The Independent their investigation is ongoing, but they are looking at this broadly and not ruling out anything at this stage.
Syrian refugee Salim Iskef, 29, an Orthodox Christian who fled the war in Syria in 2015, was yesterday identified as the first victim.
