The former home of disgraced deputy mayor Salim Mehajer – whose infamous wedding closed down a street in the Sydney suburb of Lidcombe – has been damaged in what authorities say is a suspicious fire.
The six-bedroom house was unoccupied at about 9.30pm on Tuesday when neighbours heard an alarm from the property and saw flames pouring out from the second floor.
The front door was open and though firefighters were able to put out the blaze within 20 minutes, the interior sustained significant damage in that time.
The damage would probably have been worse but for a lack of furniture inside to fuel it.
‘The responding firefighters have identified some serious areas of concern in how the fire was ignited,’ Fire and Rescue NSW superintendent Adam Dewberry said.
The police have set up a crime scene and an investigation into the source of the blaze is underway.
