Suspect in custody and one victim rushed to hospital after Colorado apartment complex shooting

An active shooter on the loose at an apartment complex in Colorado has been apprehended.

The suspect was taken into custody just before 10.30am local time. One victim was rushed to the local hospital in an unknown condition.

Police were called to the Arista Flats in Broomfield, northwest of Denver, on Thursday morning. 

Residents were told to shelter in place and avoid the are which has now been designated as secure. 

Cop were reporting shots still being fired as of 8.07am local time and described the scene as a ‘fluid situation’.

A SWAT team and crisis negotiators have been drafted in to help deal with the emergency.

‘The surrounding area is NOT SAFE,’ Broomfield Police said in a statement. ‘Limited evacuations have been done. Everyone else please avoid the area.’

The police also confirmed that nearby Jefferson Academy is ‘on secure’. 

‘When a building is on secure it is business as usual inside the school,’ the statement said. The doors are locked, no one is coming or going.’

Broomfield is located 16 miles away from Denver, on the opposite side of the city to Aurora, where a migrant gang took over an apartment complex. 

One resident told CBS she was walking her dog when she heard a volley of shots.

‘Took the dog out as usual, just before 8 o’clock out of my patio and as soon as I put her down on the grass, I heard, “Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop!”‘ the resident said.

 ‘There was a kid walking to the school bus, and there’s a rock over there in the park and as soon as we heard those shots, he jumped behind the rock and he told me to ‘get in, get in, get in!”

‘I grabbed the dog and ran back inside and I heard all these cops coming and I heard more shots being fired and I was just really scared because I knew that it was gunshots at that point.’
