The official spokesman for the Ministry of Irrigation, Mohamed Ghanem, confirmed that covered drainage is an important tool; To maintain the quality of agricultural lands in Egypt. Flood irrigation traditionally used on older lands can cause large amounts of water to accumulate in the upper layers of the soil; This creates a phenomenon known as “land dampening,” which causes a lack of oxygen available to plant roots.
He said: “The Ministry seeks to improve agricultural drainage by implementing networks of Pipes that are buried deep under the roots of plants in the soil to help drain excess water from the soil, where they are collected in collectors that reconnect them to the main agricultural drainage networks.” He pointed out that most of the old lands in Egypt, whose area increases On 6 million acres, it has already been converted to a covered drainage system, and this process is still ongoing.
It is noteworthy that the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources is preparing to launch a national covered drainage project, which It aims to replace, renew and create covered drainage networks for an area of 1.40 million acres.
