In Spain, a law has come into force providing for up to a year in prison for protesters who prevent women from exercising their right to have an abortion.
Those who attempt, through “acts of harassment, attacks, intimidation and threats” to prevent women “from exercising their legal right to terminate a pregnancy” risk imprisonment.
The law also complements the already existing norm for people who have committed such a crime for the first time – in addition to imprisonment, the court will be able to sentence them to correctional labour.
Abortion opponents have criticized the new legislation, adding that they will not give up because they do not threaten the woman, but only pray near clinics that provide this type of service.
Praying is not a crime!
Activist Immacolata Fernandez said: Prayer is not a crime!
“And we will continue to pray and help women so that they understand that abortion is not the only way out.”
It is worth noting that the government plans in the near future to allow teenage girls between the ages of 16 and 17 not to provide parental consent to have an abortion.
