Shoppers flock to Costco ‘dupe’ store in California… and it offers perks the retail giant doesn’t

A California Costco ‘dupe’ store is luring in shoppers who can’t get enough of its deals and perks.

‘Koshco’ in Los Angeles has a remarkably similar façade to the warehouse giant with red and white colored letters underscored by a blue stripe, and also sells items in bulk.

However, the store has some notable differences to the much-loved chain.

Most notably Koshco, located in the in the center of a Jewish community in the city’s Pico-Robertson neighborhood, is entirely kosher.

The store stocks an enormously wide range of fresh groceries as well as miscellaneous items such as Israeli candles.

Although Koshco does not require membership to shop there – as Costco famously does – its members do receive discounts and free local delivery.

The store also stocks mainstream brands such as Mary’s Gone Crackers and Kellogg’s, whereas Costco mostly stocks its own brand products.

Koshco also has its own kosher deli where shoppers can find cold cuts of meat, including oven-roasted turkey, sausages and salami.

The store also has a bakery stocked with goods from nearby Beverlywood Bakery, including raspberry and cream cheese rogelach, apricot hamentashen and a range of challahs, SFGate reported.

Costco executives may well be tuning in to what makes this ‘dupe’ so popular, as the giant recently lost its title as the nation’s favorite grocery store.

After leading the rankings of an influential customer satisfaction survey in 2024, the wholesale giant has slipped to seventh place in 2025 – with its score falling from 85 percent to 81 percent.

The American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) survey asked customers about their experiences at 19 grocery stores.

Retail analyst Neil Saunders said this marks a rare setback for the store, known for its loyal membership base, bulk bargains, and no-frills shopping experience.

‘Costco is extremely successful and its above average growth rates don’t reflect the lower satisfaction rating,’ Saunders, the managing director of Global Data told DailyMail.com.

‘However, there might be a few things dragging it down.’

Saunders said overfilled parking lots, slow wait times at checkout, and Costco’s limited ecommerce sales likely contributed to the brand’s fall from satisfaction dominance.

Ron Vachris, who became CEO on January 1, launched several tech programs that are hoping to cut down on membership card sharing, maintain low prices, quicken checkout lines, and increase parking lot churn.

Costco also hiked its memberships fees in the fall, raising its standard membership by $5 a year, taking it from $60 to $65.

The Executive level – which offers a 2 percent rebate on all Costco purchases made that year up to a total of $750 – increased by $10 to $130 a year.

As well as in store discounts a Costco membership gives customers access to services such as hearing tests and home insurance.
