Scottie Scheffler has been forced to pull out of the first PGA tournament of the year after getting pieces of glass stuck in his hand while preparing Christmas dinner.
Scheffler was scheduled to compete in the Tour’s 2025 season-opener, The Sentry, from January 2-5 over in Hawaii.
Yet following the freak Christmas-Day accident, which forced him to undergo surgery when ‘small glass fragments’ remained in his right hand, the current World No. 1 must now spend up to a month recovering.
‘On Christmas Day while preparing dinner, Scottie sustained a puncture wound to the palm of his right hand from a broken glass. Small glass fragments remained in the palm which required surgery,’ his manager Blake Smith said in a statement on Friday.
‘He has been told that he should be back to 100% in three to four weeks. Unfortunately, he will have to withdraw from The Sentry. His next scheduled tournament is The American Express.’
Scheffler, who was not set to play in Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods’ new tech-infused golf league on January 8, is also likely to miss Hawaii’s Sony Open from January 9-12.

He is expected to return in time for the American Express in La Quinta, California, from January 16-19.
Scheffler’s freak injury is the final chapter of what has been an astonishing 2024 for the golf star.
One month after winning his second Masters in April he was infamously arrested while making his way into Valhalla for the PGA Championship, before being hit with a number of charges after allegedly speeding away in his car and dragging a police officer to the ground in the process.
However, just under two weeks later all charges against the two-time major winner were dropped.
Only a matter of days before the astonishing events at Valhalla, Scheffler and his wife Meredith welcomed their first child, Bennett.
Meredith had been heavily pregnant during The Masters the previous month, with Scottie vowing to leave Augusta if she went into labor.
Scheffler also went on to triumph at the Paris Olympics, before winning the FedEx Cup and becoming the first golfer since Tiger Woods to win the Jack Niclaus Award in three straight seasons.
To close out the year from a golf standpoint, earlier this month Scheffler and partner Rory McIlroy banked 10million in cryptocurrency after beating Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka in an unofficial ‘showdown’ between the cream of LIV Golf and the PGA Tour.
