Sabrina Carpenter goes goth for summer 2025

We’re more used to seeing her lips slathered with bubblegum gloss and cheeks dusted with candy-coloured blush, but for summer 2025, Sabrina Carpenter’s had a  bit of a makeover. In a new shoot for Versace, the singer is captured lying poolside by Carlijn Jacobs, switching out her usual sparkly, saccharine palette for something a bit more seductive, in the form of a shit-ton of black eyeliner and a slash of deep plum lipstick – your typical beachy and bronzed high-summer ad this is not.

The La Vacanza campaign also sees her slip into pieces from Donatella’s last Versace summer collection, after the legend announced she was stepping down from her position as creative director to make way for new-blood designer Dario Vitale. In one shot, Carpenter stretches out by the pool in a plunging gold metallic swimsuit, while in another she wraps up in a black kaftan and clutches a turquoise leather bag stamped with the house’s signature logo. It’s giving lonely wayward heiress holed up in  the Chateau Marmont, a battered copy of Eve Babitz’ Black Swans tucked just out of sight, Lana’s “Summertime Sadness” crackling through the radio speaker.

This isn’t Carpenter’s first Versace rodeo, either, after she was tapped to star in the house’s eyewear campaign in 2024. In that, she helped resurrect the iconic ‘Biggie’ cat-eye frame, which took its name from rapper Biggie Smalls in the 90s and comes complete with flashy gold Medusa detailing. She’s also stepped out onto the red carpet in a bunch of looks by Donatella. Of her starring role in the campaign this time around, Carpenter explains she’s always felt “empowered when wearing Versace clothes”, but failed to comment on her gothy makeover.
