Russian intelligence agency claims it foiled terror attack in Moscow

New Delhi: Russian intelligence agency FSB – a successor of the KGB – said it foiled a terrorist attack on a police station in Moscow last week. Highly placed sources told ET that ISIS’ Afghanistan unit, which goes by name of ‘Vilayat Khorasan’, was planning the attack, but it was thwarted by FSB with support from intelligence received from the Taliban.

The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) also said that several members of the ‘Khorasan Province’ group were killed in the counter terrorism move. According to the Russian security service, the individuals offered armed resistance to security forces during their arrest but were “neutralised”.

The terrorists were reportedly Tajiks. Tajikistan is seen as vulnerable to ISIS ideology which is reportedly gaining ground along the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border. The terrorists had bought a car and propane gas cylinders, the sources said, adding the plan was to make a bomb and plant the car with the gas cylinders and IED at the police station.
