Ruben Amorim admits Man United need to be ‘really careful’ with Christian Eriksen after cardiac arrest – as Danish star misses Tottenham clash

Ruben Amorim has claimed Man United need to be ‘really careful’ with Christian Eriksen as the repercussions of his cardiac arrest in 2021 continue to impact his career.

The midfielder, 33, fell to the ground and suffered an on-pitch cardiac arrest near the end of the first half during Denmark’s Euro 2020 clash with Finland.

While Eriksen recovered to play at the highest level for Brentford, and now United, there remain concerns as to how the Danish star continues his career.

After missing out on United’s recent trip to Tottenham due to illness – which saw them suffer a 1-0 defeat – Amorim opened up on Eriksen’s situation.

Amorim said: ‘I think Leny (Yoro) and Chris, they were sick. So they will recover. Of course Chris has the heart situation and we have to be really careful with that.

‘It’s nothing about the heart! I’m just saying the heart rate has to be controlled because he has a fever.’

Eriksen has made just 13 appearances for United in the league campaign this season, starting just seven of those and recording just one assist along the way.

He became the first top-flight player to be fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator – a device which reset the heart after a cardiac arrest – after he collapsed on the pitch.

Meanwhile, earlier in the season, United full-back Noussair Mazraoui suffered a health scare and underwent a heart procedure after complaining of palpitations.

Club sources say there was no emergency situation and the minor corrective procedure for a relatively normal condition was a success.

Eriksen and Yoro were just two of the United stars who were unable to feature in the match – with Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Mason Mount, Jonny Evans, Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte, Toby Collyer and Amad Diallo are all ruled out of action.

As a result, Amorim bolstered his squad for the trip to north London by calling up as many as seven teenagers from the United academy.

Midfielders Sekou Kone and Jack Moorhouse, both 19, Elyh Harrison, 18, left back Harry Amass, 17, and striker Chido Obi, 17, midfielder Jack Fletcher, 17, and defender Tyler Fredricson, 19, were all named on the bench for the Premier League clash.

However, the Portuguese boss only called upon one of his starlets – Chido Obi – during the defeat to Spurs.

Obi caught the attention of the media multiple times while playing youth football for former club Arsenal.

He famously scored 10 goals for the Gunners’ U16 side in a 14-3 win over Liverpool in November 2023. He then hit seven goals in April last year during a 9-0 win over Norwich at U18 level.

United pulled off a huge coup by signing Obi in September and he scored a hat-trick on his first start for his new club’s U18 team in a 6-0 win over Nottingham Forest. He hit another hat-trick last week in a 5-1 win over Chelsea.
