Rory McIlroy faces nail-biting Players Championship playoff with JJ Spaun after dramatic climax at TPC Sawgrass

Rory McIlroy will return to Sawgrass for a three-hole playoff against world No 57 JJ Spaun after a nervy climax to Sunday’s final round.

Spaun, the unheralded American, came within inches of making a birdie on the 18th hole that would have seen him clinch an incredible victory.

But he closed on 12-under-par to leave him in a tie with McIlroy. They will be back at TPC Sawgrass on Monday morning to determine the winner.
