Pope Tawadros II, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of Mark, will chair, this evening, the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Institute of Coptic Studies.

 

Institute of Coptic Studies:   

The institute was established in 1954 AD, with a decision issued by the General Local Council approving its establishment on January 21, 1954. The Ministry of Education approved its establishment in its letter issued by the Higher Education Administration No. 1264 dated July 10, 1955, and praised it. With the idea of ​​establishing it to serve national history in the Christian era and fill the deficit in this field, and on December 17, 1954, the opening ceremony of the institute was held. The international scientific community met the idea of ​​its establishment with great interest, and was quick to send its scientists and researchers to it for joint scientific cooperation.

The institute is interested in specialized studies that include several fields, including the theological and ecclesiastical sciences, the humanities, social, educational and media studies, and others. The Institute also works to serve the church, society, and nation, on spiritual, scientific, research, and applied foundations. The Institute works to communicate and coordinate with local and international scientific bodies specialized in the field of Coptic studies. The Institute’s departments and specializations:

The Institute includes eleven departments, as follows:

Theology Department: It aims to study the theological sciences and its various branches, including the sciences of doctrinal, theoretical, literary, spiritual, pastoral, biblical, liturgical, and comparative theology. And others, studying the foundations of proper interpretation of the Holy Bible, studying theological linguistic terms and expressions, studying ecumenical councils, and the writings and sayings of the Fathers, And ecumenical dialogues, etc. 

Coptic Language Department: It aims to teach the Coptic language (reading, writing, grammar, conversation, and translation), It works to preserve the Coptic language, its melodies, and prayers with proper church pronunciation, and to study its grammar, dialects, history, and development. And the connection between it and the ancient Egyptian language

The Department of Coptic Melodies and Music: is concerned with Coptic melodies and music, and their preservation, including This requires studying the sciences of music composition, music notation, and musical notation, which helps students to appreciate Coptic melodies, study and analyze them, and understand their spiritual meanings. Interest also extends to the study of comparative music and the music of other peoples.

Department of Coptic Art. He is interested in studying Coptic arts of all kinds, such as icons, the arts of painting and decoration, the arts of fresco, mosaics, sculpture, wood, ceramics, pottery, glass, metals, and Coptic weaving. Components and contents of churches, such as altars, sickles, icon holders, windows, their glass, drawings, etc., and studying the art of wall painting with its various materials and shapes.

Department of Coptic Architecture: It is concerned with studying Coptic architecture and its elements, with an analysis of its characteristics  and its development, and what this requires of studying architectural theories.  The history of church architecture, the study of the archaeological area, the study of architectural styles and their development, And its symbols.  

Department of Coptic Antiquities: It is concerned with studying fixed and movable Coptic antiquities. Preserving, recording, restoring and maintaining them. It is interested in studying archaeological churches and monasteries and their contents, including icons, manuscripts, antiquities, etc., in addition to studying some ancillary sciences, including ancient Egyptian antiquities, Greco-Roman antiquities, the ancient Egyptian language, and the Coptic language.

Department of Coptic History: It is interested in Coptic history in all its eras. And its stages, from the Apostolic era until the modern era, including the history of the Ecumenical Councils and the history of the Patriarchs of Alexandria, The role of Copts in political, social, and economic events, and their role in the national movement.

Department of Sociology and Education: It brings together a number of social specializations necessary to study social life in its multiple aspects, including sociology, anthropology, social service, psychology, and education.< /p>

 The department is concerned with the fields of human development, practical service, and training and preparing ministers and workers in various church fields.

Department of African Studies: The department provides  a specialized culture on The continent of Africa, as the mother continent, and studying the cultural, cultural, literary and artistic influences and influences exchanged between Egypt and the continent in order to develop their knowledge of it, consolidate relations with its peoples, and the history of the church in Africa, prepare specialized ministers and researchers, and is interested in studying the continent in an integrated study.

Studies Department Media: It aims to use technological knowledge and scientific theories in the field of media to serve the Coptic heritage. For this reason, media theories are taught, the origin, history and development of the media, and what is related to public relations. And media documentation and communication theories, and how to use them to serve the Coptic heritage..

Department of Eastern Christian Heritage: The department is interested in studying the history, heritage and civilization of the sister Eastern Orthodox churches, as well as studying the Coptic heritage written in Arabic, and the heritage translated from Greek and Coptic into Arabic.

Language Center: It is a specialized center for teaching ancient and modern languages. It organizes educational courses for translation and conversation, and the study of terminology and theological texts in the English language. And others..
