Plymouth director of football to leave after Wayne Rooney’s sacking – as rock bottom Championship side draw first match since Man United legend’s exit
Plymouth director of football Neil Dewsnip is set to follow Wayne Rooney out of the door at the Devon club.
Rooney parted company with Argyle on New Year’s Eve after a nine-match winless run left them rock bottom of the Championship.
And Mail Sport understands transfer chief Dewsnip will also be leaving the club and was not present at Home Park for their 2-2 draw against Bristol City this afternoon, in which Julio Pleguezuelo scored an injury-time equaliser.
Dewsnip has been at the club since 2019 and was an integral member of their rise from League Two to the Championship but they have struggled since their promotion to the second tier, with Ian Foster lasting just 16 matches before Rooney was hired.
The 63-year-old has also taken charge of the team on an interim basis twice and previously worked as a youth coach for England.
Speaking to Mail Sport last season, chairman Simon Hallett outlined his vision to lead Plymouth into the Premier League in a ‘five-year plan’ — but things have only gone backwards since Steven Schumacher departed Argyle for fellow Championship side Stoke City.

Former England and Manchester United legend Rooney was in the job for seven months and eyebrows were raised when he was appointed, given his catastrophic tenure at Birmingham saw the Second City club relegated to League One.
In a statement he thanked the club for giving him the job in May, declaring that Argyle would always have a ‘special place in my heart’ and he and the fans would have ‘memories that we will share forever’.
