Pizza shop owner’s final heartwrenching act before he was allegedly stabbed to death – as his shattered family break his silence

A father-of-four who was allegedly stabbed to death in his pizza shop had wished his daughter a happy birthday just hours before his death.

Sonmez Alagoz, 58, was fatally stabbed in the chest at The Pizza Stop on the Great Western Highway, near Kingswood Train Station in Sydney, at 10.20pm on Tuesday.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated Mr Alagoz at the restaurant before he was taken to Westmead Hospital, where he died about 12.30am.

Police have arrested six teenagers, four males and two females, in relation to the incident and have since charged one 15-year-old boy with murder.

Mr Alagoz’s family are now demanding justice as they come to grips with the fact that he was so suddenly taken away from them.

His wife, Turkan, said her and their family are reeling from the loss.

‘He had the kindest heart [and] worked very hard for his children. He never wanted anything greater than that, just his children,’ she told 9News

Mr Alagoz’s daughter had just recently given birth to his first grandchild, and his son, Vulkan, said his dad was the nicest man he had ever known.

Turkan Alagoz has broken her silence for the first time since her husband, Sonmez, was allegedly murdered at his Sydney pizza shop late Tuesday night

‘If you were hungry he fed you if you needed a little bit of money in your pockets to use a payphone or catch a train he’d give it to you,’ he told the publication.

‘Most importantly if you needed a chat he’d sit you down.’

Flowers and other tributes are now lining the outside of Mr Alagoz’s pizza shop in the wake of his death, as police appeal to the public for information.

Police initially arrested the 15-year-old boy, a 17-year-old boy, two 13-year-old girls, an 18-year-old girl, and a 19-year-old man at homes in Werrington, South Penrith, and Penrith on Tuesday night.

They were all released pending further inquiries before the 15-year-old was re-arrested and charged with murder at 1.10pm on Wednesday.

The 15-year-old faced Parramatta Children’s Court on Thursday.

His family refused to answer reporters questions outside the courthouse.

Superintendent Trent King, Commander of the Nepean Police Area, said Mr Alagoz had sustained a ‘gruesome’ injury.

‘This was a gentleman that was going about his business, running his business within the local area and certainly didn’t deserve what occurred,’ he said.

Supt King said Mr Alagoz was ‘very closely connected’ to his community and several nearby businesses told Daily Mail Australia his passing was a ‘great shame’.

Another local man said: ‘On many occasions when I was broke and barely surviving [Mr Alagoz] let me have food from his pizza shop for free at the end of the night.’

NSW Premier Chris Minns said his government is growing increasingly concerned with the growing crime rates around the state.

‘I have been concerned particularly across New South Wales, not just in Sydney, about rising rates in youth crime,’ he told reporters Wednesday.

Investigators will work to establish why the group of teenagers, who were previously known to police, were near the store on Tuesday night.

‘Initial investigations indicated those teenagers were in and around the vicinity at the time. They are known to police [but] weren’t dining in the restaurant,’ Supt King said.

Police have appealed for anyone with information about the stabbing to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online.
