To announce its big departure, Ouest-France allowed itself one last post on X: “This is our last tweet, for the moment. In accordance with our values, we have decided to suspend publications on all of our X accounts”wrote the newspaper, Tuesday November 19. It had already been several weeks that the regional daily newspaper had been rare on the social network, an absence caused by the poor moderation of violent comments found on the platform.
Ouest-France is not the first European media to leave the social network in recent days. First there was The Guardian in England, then La Vanguardia in Spain, followed by the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter. The departures are also linked to the owner of X, Elon Musk, recently appointed to the new administration of Donald Trump. Since his purchase of Twitter in 2022, the billionaire has encouraged users to be wary of the media.
