The Australian ambassador in Tehran has been summoned by Iran’s foreign ministry, a state-sponsored news agency reports, over claims of Australia’s biased stance on Iran’s attack against Israel.
Iranian news agency Tasnim reported on Sunday that Ian McConville was summoned due to Australia’s “repeated bias”, including on Iran’s response to what it called “the Zionist regime,” meaning Israel.
McConville is a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and was most recently the chief of protocol.
Previously, McConville served as the high commissioner to Nigeria and to Mauritius and served at diplomatic missions in the Republic of Korea, Switzerland (UN), Cambodia and Pakistan.
Australia’s embassy in Tehran had not yet responded to a request for comment. DFAT and a spokesperson for Foreign Minister Penny Wong have also been contacted for comment.
